About Nine Mile Swamp Wildlife Area

Nine Mile Swamp Wildlife Area is located in Collier County, Florida, within the northern portion of the Big Cypress Basin. This protected expanse covers diverse habitats including pine flatwoods, cypress swamps, wet prairies, and hardwood hammocks, supporting a rich variety of wildlife such as white-tailed deer, bobcats, alligators, and a wide array of migratory birds. The area plays an important role in preserving water quality and flood control as part of the greater Everglades ecosystem. Originally managed to maintain habitat for game species, the Wildlife Area now serves both conservation and outdoor recreation purposes. Visitors can enjoy canoeing or kayaking through waterways and swamps, hunting during regulated seasons, birdwatching at key observation points, and hiking on marked trails that meander through diverse environments. The area’s relatively undisturbed character provides a feeling of remoteness despite its proximity to urban centers like Naples. Notable landmarks include the historic Nine Mile Swamp fishing camp and the network of canals built for water management. This Wildlife Area is a destination where visitors can experience the unique subtropical wilderness of South Florida, offering scenic beauty and abundant wildlife viewing opportunities year-round.
